How we verify
NY Public Work Contractor Check is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.
Sources
- NYS Department of Labor: Contractor Registry Certificate (data.ny.gov i4jv-zkey) — DOL's daily open data file of Contractor Registry certificates and the disclosures each registration contains.
- New York Labor Law §220-i (contractor registration) — Who must register, what the registration must disclose, the fee, the two-year term and the public registry.
- New York Labor Law §220 (prevailing wage on public work) — Prevailing wage, wage schedules, posting and certified payroll.
- New York Labor Law §224-a (covered private projects) — The $5 million / 30% public funds definition of a covered project and its exclusions.
- Empire State MWBE Hub — The state's directory of certified minority- and women-owned business enterprises.
We download the NYS Department of Labor's Contractor Registry Certificate data (data.ny.gov i4jv-zkey) and list every certificate DOL shows as Active whose expiration date has not passed on the day we check. Contractors based outside New York are included, because they register to work on New York projects.
The listing name is the "doing business as" name where the registration gives one, with the legal business name as a fact. Names, addresses and cities are as the contractor entered them; we tidy capitalisation and remove a state or ZIP typed into the city field. A few rows whose city field holds a street address are left out because they cannot be placed in a city.
Every disclosure answer (MWBE, workers' compensation, unemployment insurance number, apprenticeship, outstanding wage assessments, debarment in the last eight years, and final determinations of labor, employment tax or workplace safety violations) is shown exactly as DOL publishes it, labelled "disclosed", with the law, state and dates DOL gives for any debarment. We never turn these answers into a badge, score, warning, ranking or summary, and we draw no conclusions from them.
Badges and categories are positive only: NYS certified MWBE, registered apprenticeship program and workers' compensation insurance, all as disclosed. Business officer names, which DOL lists for publicly traded companies, are not shown.
Order within a city: alphabetical. Featured contractors appear in a separate, labelled box and never change that order.
What a badge means
Registered: the NYS Department of Labor Contractor Registry shows the certificate as Active with an expiration date that has not passed on the date shown. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.
Freshness
Data was last refreshed on 2026-10-16. DOL updates the Contractor Registry data daily; we re-download it weekly. Confirm a certificate in DOL's current data on the day you rely on it.
