Common questions
Who has to register with the NYS Contractor Registry?
Under Labor Law §220-i, no contractor may bid on a contract for public work unless it is registered, and contractors and subcontractors must register before starting work on a covered private project (over $5 million with at least 30% public funds, under Labor Law §224-a). Certificates last two years.
What do the disclosure answers mean?
They are the answers the contractor gave on its registration to questions the statute requires, about wage assessments, debarment in the last eight years, and final determinations of labor, employment tax or safety violations. We show them exactly as DOL publishes them. A yes answer does not explain the circumstances or show whether the matter is resolved; ask the contractor and check the relevant agency's records.
Is a registered contractor licensed?
Registration is not a trade licence and not a prequalification. Electricians, plumbers and some other trades are licensed separately, often by the municipality, and public owners apply their own responsibility reviews.
How do I confirm MWBE certification?
The registry shows the contractor's MWBE answer. The authoritative check is the Empire State MWBE Hub, the state's directory of certified firms, which shows the certification and its expiration.
Why don't I see a contractor?
We list only certificates DOL shows as Active and unexpired, and update weekly. A firm may be registered under a different legal name, or have registered since our last update. Check DOL's data directly.
Is this site run by the state?
No. NY Public Work Contractor Check is an independent directory compiled from the Department of Labor's published open data.
